Top 10 Natural Remedies for a Headache Cure

Finding a headache cure is sure to be at the top of the list for anyone who is suffering from one.  There are many different causes of headaches and a few different names to describe them but no matter what you call them, they are all just a pain.  It is said that Americans suffering from headaches also suffer from recurring ones and 28 million Americans suffer from migraines.

Tension headaches are the most common and can cause mild and sometimes moderate pain and can come and go over time.  Migraines are somehow related to the blood vessel contractions and abnormalities in the brain.  The pain can be more than sever and cause sensitivity to light and sound, often resulting in nausea and vomiting.  Mixed headache syndrome is a combination of tension and migraine and is common in children and adults.  Cluster headaches are the most severe and thankfully, they are the least common.  They are very intense and commonly occur behind the eye area.  Sinus headaches generally bring a constant pain located in the forehead, bridge of nose and cheekbones and can be accompanied with other sinus issues like stuffy nose and scratch throat.  There are many natural remedies to be used as a headache cure that you can try instead of medicine.

  1. Caffeine - drinking a cup of herbal tea can constrict blood vessels eliminating the pain.  Too much caffeine however can trigger migraines which is why herbal tea is always recommended over coffee or soda to be used as a headache cure.

  2. Aromatherapy - this is essentially an ancient healing form that can be primarily used for stress headaches.  You can use this for a headache cure by inhaling the oils or use them with massage.  Peppermint oil seems to be the oil of choice.

  3. Massage - massaging your neck, face and temples can relieve circulation issues in your facial muscles causing some headaches.  Applying pressure to the back of the neck is also recommended.

  4. Lime - cutting a lime in half and rubbing it on your forehead can be used as a headache cure.  No one really knows why but it eliminates the throbbing.

  5. Reflexology - by using the index finger and thumb on one hand you can apply pressure to the flesh area located between your index finger and thumb on the other hand.  It doesn’t work for everyone but on some it works immediately.

  6. Ice or heat - migraine sufferers find that by icing the forehead or back of the neck can really help the pain.  Some argue that they prefer a heating pad instead of the ice.  Both are worth trying for your headache cure.

  7. Water - dehydration is a number one cause of headaches.  The lack of water essentially affects your supply of oxygen and blood.  Water is very important for your body to function properly.

  8. Exercise - regular exercise can help to prevent headaches but can also help to cure them.  Some find that walking with a migraine results in the pain diminishing.  It may be uncomfortable at first but the body releases endorphins when exercising which is a natural painkiller.

  9. Headband - by tying a headband around your head (not too tight) you restrict the blood vessels in your temple often resulting in an immediate headache cure.

  10. Ginger - no one can really explain how this works but by chewing on a piece of ginger it not only stops a headache but can also stop nausea.

Next time your head starts pounding don’t reach for the medicine cabinet.  Studies show that taking pain medicine constantly can actually result in recurring headaches.  Try some of these home remedies for your next headache cure.
